In most cases, yes — but not always. If you experience a qualifying event (e.g., losing a job, having a baby or moving to a different state), you may be able to enroll in ACA Marketplace plans outside that window. Call to speak to a licensed insurance agent for answers to your questions about enrollment.

Frequently asked questions

When the ACA was first implemented, you could be subject to a federal tax penalty if you weren't covered by a health plan that met or exceeded the ACA’s minimum essential coverage requirements. The federal tax penalty no longer applies. However, state penalties may still apply in some states. Check with a tax advisor in your state for more information.

If you are subject to state penalty, different kinds of exemptions related to income, hardships and more may apply to your situation. If you believe you may be eligible for an exemption, you can learn more at Healthcare.gov about fees and exemptions.

Preexisting condition limitations have been eliminated from ACA Marketplace health plans. You can’t be denied ACA health insurance coverage on the basis of a health condition, and you can't be charged a higher premium because of your condition.

  • Employers: Some employers offer health insurance to their employees at a reduced rate.
  • Health insurance marketplaces: Marketplaces, or “exchanges,” are a way for people to shop for and buy health insurance, which may be referred to as a health plan. Each marketplace is divided between individual (for families and individuals) and SHOP (health plans for small employers) marketplaces.
  • Health insurance companies: Insurance companies, including UnitedHealthcare, can offer plans directly to people. We can also offer approved plans through the marketplaces.

If a health insurance plan covers children of a policyholder, they can be added to or kept on the policy until they turn 26 years old.

The ACA requires issuers to provide a Summary of Benefits and Coverage.

These plans are medically underwritten. Benefits are not paid for expenses resulting from preexisting conditions. See specific plans for details. THIS PLAN PROVIDES LIMITED BENEFITS. THIS IS A SUPPLEMENT TO HEALTH INSURANCE AND IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE MINIMUM ESSENTIAL COVERAGE REQUIRED BY THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT (ACA). Lack of major medical coverage (or other minimum essential coverage) may result in an additional payment with your taxes.

2Coverage varies depending on the dental plan chosen. See brochure for details. If you use an out-of-network dentist, your benefit will either be determined by the reasonable and customary charge or by the network negotiated rate. An out-of-network dentist can bill a patient for any remaining amount up to the billed charge.
