Frequently asked questions

A traditional short term health insurance plan lasts a few months to up to 1 day less than 12 months, depending on where you live. TriTerm Medical, underwritten by Golden Rule Insurance Company, is a type of extended short term, limited-duration health insurance that was designed to be more benefit-rich than most other short term plans. TriTerm Medical plans also last longer than those plans — with term lengths that are just days short of 3 years of coverage.2 TriTerm Medical is a medically underwritten plan that offers valuable benefits that you likely need, including preventive care, urgent care, prescription drug coverage, doctor’s visits and more.

Medical underwriting, which uses several factors, including prior applications, medical history and age, is used to determine eligibility. The primary applicant must be between 19 and 63, with coverage ending at age 65. Coverage is available for individuals and families. TriTerm Medical insurance is not guaranteed issue.

Yes. Extended short term health insurance offers flexible options, including various deductible amounts, so you can choose the plan that best fits your budget and needs.

Most plans have a $1 million or $2 million lifetime maximum benefit for each covered individual, depending on the state.

For preventive care benefits, plans have a 6-month waiting period during the first year of the plan, and preexisting conditions aren’t covered until after 12 months. Most other benefits are available as soon as your plan starts.

It’s likely you could continue seeing the same providers. TriTerm Medical uses the UnitedHealthcare nationwide network that includes 1.8 million providers and more than 7,200 hospitals and other medical facilities, giving you plenty of options.3

Although there is no longer a federal tax penalty for not having ACA insurance, there may still be penalties at the state level. Consider consulting your tax advisor for more information.

STATE VARIATIONS MAY APPLY.

This coverage is not required to comply with certain federal market requirements for health insurance, principally those contained in the Affordable Care Act. Be sure to check your policy carefully to make sure you are aware of any exclusions or limitations regarding coverage of preexisting conditions or health benefits (such as hospitalization, emergency services, maternity care, preventive care, prescription drugs, and mental health and substance use disorder services). Your policy might also have lifetime and/or annual dollar limits on health benefits. If this coverage expires or you lose eligibility for this coverage, you might have to wait until an Open Enrollment Period to get other health insurance coverage.
